Padres 5 Red Sox 1
Winning Pitcher: Clayton Richard (3-9)
Losing Pitcher: John Lackey (5-6)
Recap
The Red Sox lost their second straight game to the Padres on Wednesday night in a rain shortened affair, as Lackey struggled once again, raising his 2011 ERA to 7.36. (More on this tomorrow). The Padres started off with a bang, as Lackey served up a lead off home run to Will Venable. He got the next three guys out, and left the inning with just the one run deficit. In the bottom of the inning, the Sox loaded the bases with one out. However, David Ortiz grounded into a double play to allow Padres starter Clayton Richard to get out of the inning unscathed. The score was the same in the top of the fourth, when the wheels fell off Lackey's proverbial bus. He quickly loaded the bases on a walk, hit batsman and bunt single. Then, he walks Venable to score one run, followed by hitting Jason Bartlett to score another. With the bases still loaded, Lackey threw a wild pitch over the glove of Varitek to allow yet another run. After an RBI single from Chase Headley, Lackey's day was over. He finished with 3.2 IP, allowing 5 runs on 4 hits, 4 walks and 4 strike outs. Michael Bowden came on in relief and got out of the inning without another run. The Red Sox were able to get one run on the obligatory Adrian Gonzalez RBI, but fell by a 5-1 score after 7.1 in a game that saw four rain delays.
