Red Sox Can't Figure Out Lee, Drop Game One to Phillies

Sports Illustrated

Phillies 5 Red Sox 0
Winning Pitcher: Cliff Lee (9-5)
Losing Pitcher: Josh Beckett (6-3)

Recap
In what was supposed to be a pitchers' duel to the end, Cliff Lee far outclassed Josh Beckett on Tuesday night, pitching his third complete game shutout of June, and extending his scoreless inning streak to 32 (Insane). After each pitcher got somewhat easy 1-2-3 innings in the first, Beckett began to run into some trouble in the second. Ryan Howard led the inning off with a single. He was eventually out at second on a grounder from Victorino, who reached on the fielders choice. One batter later, Beckett served up a home run right down the heart of the plate to Dominic Brown. With the way Lee was looking on the mound, that 2-0 lead turned out to be all the Phillies needed. Lee even did it with the bat tonight, connecting for a sac fly to the left field warning track, giving the Phils a 3-0 lead. In the top of the sixth, Marco Scutaro was able to lead the inning off with a base hit, the Red Sox first hit of the game. Nothing came to fruition that inning, however. In the bottom of the inning, Beckett allowed another 2-run shot to Shane Victorino, and he would be done after the inning. He finished up with 6 innings, allowing five runs on five hits, one walk and just one strikeout. Meanwhile, Lee continued to dominate, and finished the game with the complete game shutout, allowing just two hits and two walks, while striking out five.
