White Sox Get to Lester en Route to Victory

Sports Illustrated

White Sox 7 Red Sox 3
Winning Pitcher: Jake Peavy (2-0)
Losing Pitcher: Jon Lester (7-2)

Recap
The White Sox were able to rough up Jon Lester in the sixth inning on Memorial Day, and it was enough to give Chicago the victory in game one of the series at Fenway. Lester was shaky from the start, following up his lead off strike out with three singles and a hit batter, which resulted in an early 2-0 hole for the Red Sox. The offense came back in the bottom of the first, when Adrian Gonzalez put one in the right field bleachers to cut the deficit in half. The White Sox put the lead back to two after Paul Konerko's solo shot, but Dustin Pedroia's 2-RBI single in the third tied the game at three. Each starting pitcher settled down for a few innings, and the game was tied at three heading into the sixth frame. Lester gave up two singles and a walk, and was looking at a bases loaded, two outs situation, with Alexei Ramirez coming to the plate. Ramirez knocked in two runners with a double, and that was the end of Lester's night. Dan Wheeler came in for relief, and gave up a 2-RBI single to Carlos Quentin. That finalized Lester's line, and he finished with 5.2 innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits and four walks, while striking out four. The Red Sox offense couldn't get it done against Chicago's bullpen, and fell to the White Sox by a 7-3 final score.
